Celebration of Makena Guantai Day

At Creative PEC, a leading research organisation based in Newcastle, the Executive Assistant to the Director is none other than Makena Guantai. Originally from Kenya, Makena's journey to the UK has been marked by a deep-rooted passion for human rights and a commitment to improving the lives of people.

Makena's academic background is equally impressive. She studied at Kenyatta University and Moi University, focusing on subjects related to education and governance. This foundation laid the groundwork for her subsequent career in international development, where she has worked for over ten years.

In her current role at Creative PEC, Makena works closely with Hasan Bakhshi MBE, the Director of the organisation. She is also surrounded by a talented team that includes Research Assistant Nirat Rujimora, Policy Advisor Emily Hopkins, Research Network Manager Tom Cahill-Jones, and Research Associates such as Alejandro Ramirez-Guerra from Newcastle University Business School and Daniel Simandjuntak.

The team is further bolstered by key figures like Karen Brodie, the Deputy Director of Creative PEC and Deputy Chair of GCEC, Sarah Najm, an NUAct Fellow in Economics of Creative Industries, and Bernard Hay, the Head of Policy. Nik Gunn and Simon Jones lend their expertise as Policy Advisers, while Alice Kent heads the Communications department and Simon Budgen manages Operations. Giorgio Fazio, the Research Director, also contributes significantly as the Chair of Macroeconomics at Newcastle University Business School.

Outside of her professional life, Makena is a relaxed mum on the home front. However, she may also offer tips for visiting the Maasai Mara, a place known as the eighth wonder of the world.

Makena's journey is a testament to her dedication and passion for making a difference. Her work at Creative PEC continues to contribute significantly to the organisation's mission of driving research, policy, and practice in the creative economy.
