Celebratory News: Two EIOH Residency Programs Recognized as Top-Notch in America

The Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH) at the University of Rochester Medical Center has made a significant leap in the world of dental education, securing the top spot in the United States for its Periodontology and Pediatric Dentistry Residency Programs. This prestigious recognition was bestowed by Universities.com 2022 and reported by Becker's Dental & DSO Review.

The success of these programs is attributed to their collaborative approach, focusing on treating underserved communities, medically complex patients, and in the operating room. The Pediatric Dentistry program, in particular, works closely with departments like hematology-oncology to increase awareness and management of oral issues in cancer patients.

The Periodontology program stands out for its rigorous training, which includes advanced techniques like extensive horizontal and vertical ridge augmentations, dental implants, and perioplastic surgeries. Residents are equipped with the latest technology to handle complex cases in a comprehensive manner, and upon graduation, they are eligible for full licensure due to the program's focus on IV sedation training.

The Pediatric Dentistry program, too, offers extensive clinical training to treat a wide range of patient populations. Faculty members have earned master's degrees in education, transforming the program's instruction and evaluation for a more effective learning experience.

Dr. Sean McLaren, chair of Pediatric Dentistry, emphasizes the dedication of faculty members as a key factor setting EIOH programs apart. He will soon be taking on a new role as Chief Quality, Compliance and Safety officer, and the director of the Office of Quality Improvement and Compliance. In his absence, Dr. Cynthia Wong, the department's program director, will take over as interim chair of the department.

The Periodontology program boasts a strong faculty and leadership support. It also maintains a close collaboration with Prosthodontics and Orthodontics. These 10 advanced and specialty programs at EIOH have seen dentists from 96 countries receive training, further solidifying its reputation as a global leader in dental education.

EIOH was founded in 1917 and consistently ranks in the top 10 of NIH/NIDCR funding, a testament to its commitment to research and innovation in the field of dentistry. The programs are fully approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, ensuring the highest standards of education and training.

This recognition is a significant achievement for the University of Rochester's Eastman Institute for Oral Health, highlighting its dedication to excellence in dental education and patient care. The rigorous recruitment process, shared values, and collaborative approach are key factors that contribute to the success of these programs.
