Newly Appointed Police Commissioners in Gelsenkirchen Prepared to Serve

On August 29, 2025, a total of 194 police officers, including 82 policewomen and 112 policemen, were appointed as Police Commissioners in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The ceremony, held at the Musiktheater im Revier, was presided over by Tim Frommeyer, President of the Gelsenkirchen Police.

The appointment marks the end of the dual studies for the 194 Police Commissioners, during which they learned the profession in theory and practice. Their training included theoretical studies at the University of Police and Administration (HSPV), courses at the State Academy for Police Training and Further Education (LAFP), and internships in the individual authorities.

In his speech, Tim Frommeyer emphasized the importance and challenges of police service, stating that the new Police Commissioners are urgently needed to tackle diverse challenges in Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Ruhr area. Timo Kasperczyk, Director of Central Tasks, also attended the ceremony and presented certificates and shoulder straps with a silver star to the new Police Commissioners.

The star on the shoulder straps awarded to the new Police Commissioners symbolizes both an award and a high responsibility, as the people rely on them for help and protection. Mayor Werner Woell welcomed the new Police Commissioners on behalf of the city of Gelsenkirchen.

The Gelsenkirchen Police offers congratulations to all graduates on their appointment and wishes them success in their future professional and personal development. Starting Monday, September 1, 2025, these newly employed police officers will have authorities including the use of bodycams and, as enabled by the federal law enacted in 2025, the option to deploy Tasers as an intermediate force measure between a baton and a firearm. They will operate under oversight mechanisms such as the independent Federal Police Commissioner established in March 2024 for transparency and accountability.

Of the 194 Police Commissioners, 27 will remain in Gelsenkirchen to reinforce the patrol service and the criminal police. The remaining Police Commissioners will begin their service in various authorities across the state, including Essen, Recklinghausen, Oberhausen, Höxter, Düsseldorf, and Viersen. The Gelsenkirchen Police Presidency, along with the presidencies in Essen, Oberhausen, and Recklinghausen, is responsible for the training of police recruits in the region.
