Celtic manager Rodgers admits Old Firm game was not played in "Celtic way"
In a closely contested match, Brendan Rodgers' Celtic side drew 0-0 against Rangers at Ibrox Stadium. This result marked the first time this season that Celtic had dropped points in the Old Firm derby.
The offensive game of Rodgers' team was not at the level he would have liked, as they failed to find the back of the net. Kieran Tierney came close with an acrobatic attempt, but Jack Butland was equal to the task, making a save to keep the scores level.
The match saw an important clean sheet for Rangers, who are now six points off the top of the Premiership. The accumulative expected goals (xG) for the match were 0.32 (0.15 for Rangers, 0.17 for Celtic), indicating a closely fought encounter.
Rangers have started the Premiership with four winless matches for only the fourth time in their history, previously occurring in 1964-65, 1978-79, and 1983-84. The team's current struggle is not easing the pressure on new boss Russell Martin.
Martin, however, was focused on the positives from the display, suggesting the result will be a solid foundation to build on moving forward. He expressed pride with the players' level of fight, desire, aggression, and their display of togetherness and spirit.
Martin also mentioned that his team might have placed too much importance on certain things and taken for granted the level of intensity and desire every week. He emphasized the need to show the level of togetherness all the time to build on the foundation set by the result.
Rodgers acknowledged that his side had defended well but lacked quality in the match. He expressed dissatisfaction with his side's offensive game, echoing Martin's sentiments about the need for improved intensity and desire.
John Souttar's goal for Rangers was ruled out by VAR due to offside, adding to the tense atmosphere of the match. Despite the draw, Celtic failed to win the opening clash against Rangers in the Premiership for only the third time in the last 10 seasons.
The team that set the longest winless streak in the Premier League since December 2005 is Sunderland, with a 20-game losing streak covering multiple seasons, including losing their last 15 matches in the 2002/03 season and the first 5 matches after their return in the 2005/06 season. Let's hope neither Celtic nor Rangers find themselves in such a predicament in the future.
