Centennial celebration of "The Gold Rush" kicks off Cannes Classics, a division highlighting the grand past of cinematography
The prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025 began with a grand celebration, screening the iconic silent film, "The Gold Rush" by Charlie Chaplin. This cinematic masterpiece, first released in 1925, turned 100 years old this year.
"The Gold Rush" is Chaplin's third feature film, and it has stood the test of time, remaining a significant piece of cinema history. The film was presented as a pre-opening event at the festival, showcasing a 4K restored version.
The restoration process was a collaborative effort, with the Cineteca di Bologna providing the 4K restored version of the film. The L'immagine Ritrovata laboratory played a crucial role in the restoration, ensuring the film's preservation for future generations.
The British Film Institute (BFI) conducted the 4K restoration, meticulously restoring Chaplin's original vision. Previously, Chaplin had revisited "The Gold Rush" in 1942, adding an orchestral score and replacing intertitles with a spoken commentary in his own voice. However, the 4K restoration returned the film to its original form, cutting the intertitles and modifying the ending back to the 1925 version.
"The Gold Rush" is renowned for its memorable sequences, such as the famous "bread roll dance" and the nail-biting moment where the cabin with the protagonist and a colleague inside slowly slides towards the abyss. These scenes, along with Chaplin's unique brand of humour and pathos, have made "The Gold Rush" a timeless classic.
In the past three years, films like "The Mother and the Whore" by Jean Eustache, "Crazy Love" by Jacques Rivette, and "Napoleon" by Abel Gance had inaugurated the Cannes Classics section. By opening with "The Gold Rush", the festival paid homage to the rich history of cinema, underscoring its commitment to preserving and celebrating filmmaking's past.
As the Cannes Film Festival continues, "The Gold Rush" serves as a reminder of the enduring power of cinema and the artistry of Charlie Chaplin. This 100-year-old masterpiece continues to captivate audiences, proving that great films truly stand the test of time.
