Change will occur in September.
As summer comes to a close in various parts of Germany, the country is gearing up for a new season with several notable changes and events on the horizon.
Summer Holidays End Across Germany
Summer holidays have wrapped up in several federal states, marking the end of a relaxing period for many. The holidays ended on July 3rd in Bremen, with other states following suit over the course of the summer, with the latest being Brandenburg on September 6th.
Oktoberfest Returns with a Twist
The famous Oktoberfest, set to begin on September 20th, will continue to accept cash as the primary means of payment, despite a shift towards cashless transactions in one tent. However, the "Münchner Stubn" tent will no longer accept cash for beer and chicken payments, aiming to streamline customer service and device repair.
Political Developments
The German Bundestag will reconvene on September 10th, with Friedrich Merz, who has been serving as Chancellor of Germany since May 6, 2025, set to take the oath before the Bundestag in September. The federal defense minister, Boris Pistorius, and federal health minister, Nina Warken, will face questions from members of parliament during this session.
Electronic Health Records
The electronic health record (ePA) will become mandatory for doctors and psychotherapists in medical practices starting at the end of the month. Patients have the option to voluntarily decide whether they want to participate in the electronic health record.
Data Protection and Price Increases
The EU Data Act, effective from September 12th, will give users of connected devices more control over their data. Meanwhile, Spotify plans to increase prices for all premium subscriptions starting in the new month, with existing customers being informed by email beforehand. The price increases vary depending on the subscription type and range from one to four euros per month.
Mandatory Data Disclosure from Manufacturers
Manufacturers of smart TVs, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, e-bikes, fitness trackers, cars, and other devices will now be required to disclose the data they collect and provide access to it.
National Warning Exercise
A national warning exercise will take place on September 11th, testing the warning means of the federal government, states, and participating districts, urban districts, and municipalities.
As Germany moves forward, these developments promise to shape the country's future in various ways, from the way we pay for goods to how we manage our personal data. Stay tuned for more updates.
