Charging station cable thefts create issues
In recent times, there has been a concerning rise in cable thefts and deliberate damage to charging infrastructure at public charging stations across Germany. According to a spokesperson for the nationwide energy company EnBW, this trend has been particularly noticeable in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.
The perpetrators, yet unidentified, target these stations primarily to steal copper cables, causing deliberate damage. This has resulted in damages now running into tens of thousands of euros. EnBW estimates the cost of repairing a cable theft to be between 5,000 to 8,000 euros per cable, which is significantly higher than the material value of the stolen copper.
Comprehensive countermeasures against cable theft are generally difficult to implement due to most charging stations being located in public spaces where cameras are not permitted. High-traffic locations can help in preventing cable theft but are not always feasible. Affected charging station operators are increasingly turning to technical solutions such as integrated GPS systems, mechanical locks for plugs, and cable covers and shields to protect against potential thefts.
Operators are also relying on deterrent measures such as lighting or video surveillance for cable theft protection. However, completely preventing vandalism at charging stations is almost impossible, according to a spokesperson for the Stadtwerke Stuttgart. Vandalism at public charging points, including graffiti and damaged displays, has been an ongoing issue.
The repair costs for operators due to cable theft are causing economic damages. For instance, at well-frequented fast-charging stations in Aachen, up to 9,000 euros can be lost monthly due to downtime caused by repairs.
In an effort to keep the public informed, the Stadtwerke Stuttgart visits each charging station a minimum of three times per year. Every week, the newsletter they offer reports on connected life, renewable energy, and new mobility, concisely and informatively summarizing the best articles, images, and backgrounds. Signing up for the newsletter is free.
In Aachen, remote locations with low nighttime foot traffic have been affected by cable theft. This trend is contradictory to previous years' experiences and has been reported by numerous utilities across Germany.
As the fight against cable theft and vandalism continues, it is essential to remain vigilant and support the efforts of charging station operators. By doing so, we can help ensure the continued availability and reliability of public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
