OpenAI Expands Presence in Australia and India

OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence research laboratory, is making significant strides in its international expansion. The company, headquartered in San Francisco, has announced plans to roll out its new subscription service, ChatGPT Go, in countries including India and Australia.

In Australia, OpenAI's growing user base is already making use of ChatGPT for a variety of tasks. According to Kate Pounder, OpenAI's Australian head of policy, Australians are utilising ChatGPT for administrative tasks, planning holidays, and even checking for potential cyber scams.

The surge in usage is evident, with over 700 million users active on OpenAI each week. Notably, the number of paying business customers on OpenAI outnumbers the developers building on the platform.

Recognising the growing community of users, OpenAI has established an Australian operating entity and is opening a new office in Sydney. The Sydney office will not only allow OpenAI to work more closely with policymakers but also deepen collaboration with Australian researchers and institutions.

UNSW, one of Australia's leading universities, has signed a unique APAC partnership agreement with ChatGPT Edu, an OpenAI-fueled offering. This agreement will deploy ChatGPT Edu to UNSW's researchers, students, and educators.

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has also entered into a multi-year partnership with OpenAI. CBA has announced its deal with OpenAI, marking a significant milestone for the AI company in the region.

The expansion in Australia follows a similar move in India, where OpenAI is now the second largest market for the company after the US. Weekly ChatGPT users in India have grown 4x in the last year, making India one of the top 10 countries for API developers on OpenAI.

In line with this growth, OpenAI is opening an office in New Delhi this year. This move is expected to further strengthen OpenAI's presence in the region and better support its growing community of users.

OpenAI's strategic partnerships with Australian companies such as Atlassian, Canva, and CBA, as well as its partnership with UNSW, underscore the company's commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation in the region.

As OpenAI continues to expand its reach, it is poised to make a significant impact on the way businesses and individuals in Australia and India interact with AI technology.
