Chelsea secures signing of Filipe Luis
Chelsea Bolster Defensive Line with Signing of Filipe Luis
Chelsea have strengthened their defensive unit with the acquisition of Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian full-back has put pen to paper on a three-year deal, making him a Blue until 2017.
Filipe Luis, an integral member of Atletico Madrid's team that won the Liga title for the first time since 1996, expressed his happiness about joining Chelsea and playing in the Premier League. He stated that he is looking forward to giving his best for the club during the coming seasons.
Jose Mourinho identified a new left-back as a top priority for the transfer window, and Filipe Luis fits the bill perfectly. The Portuguese manager is looking to build a squad that can improve on a third-placed finish from last season.
The deal was agreed with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, with Filipe Luis passing his medical and putting an end to speculation linking him with a move to Stamford Bridge. He made 180 appearances for the Spanish club, winning the UEFA Europa League, Copa del Rey, and two UEFA Super Cups during his time at Atletico Madrid.
The second player José Mourinho signed from Atlético Madrid to Chelsea during the transfer window was Paulo Ferreira. Meanwhile, Ashley Cole left Chelsea to join Roma after his contract expired, creating a vacancy at the left-back position.
Cesar Azpilicueta may shift to a more familiar right-back role due to Filipe Luis' arrival, as the Spaniard has been predominantly playing as a left-back in Cole's absence. The signing of Filipe Luis is also significant as he follows Diego Costa in joining Chelsea from Atletico Madrid, further strengthening the bond between the two clubs.
Cesc Fabregas has also been signed by Chelsea during the current transfer window, adding another dimension to Mourinho's squad. With Filipe Luis' addition, Chelsea are well-equipped to challenge for honours in the upcoming season.
