Chelsea suffers setback due to questionable referee decisions, causing Silva's outrage
In a closely contested Premier League match at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea emerged victorious over Fulham with a 2-0 scoreline. The defeat marks the second week that Fulham have been embroiled in controversy surrounding Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions.
The opening goal for Chelsea came in first-half stoppage time, with Joao Pedro finding the back of the net. This was Chelsea's latest first-half goal on record since the 2006-07 season in a Premier League game. The goal, however, was not without controversy, as Rodrigo Muniz was penalized for stepping on Trevoh Chalobah during the play leading to the disallowed goal.
The second goal for Chelsea came in the form of a penalty, awarded after Chalobah's cross struck the arm of Ryan Sessegnon. Enzo Fernandez converted the penalty to secure Chelsea's win.
Fulham's boss, Marco Silva, expressed his disappointment with the decisions made by VAR during the match. The London club has faced a penalty in each of their first three games in a season, making them the sixth side in Premier League history to do so.
Despite the loss, Joao Pedro maintained a positive outlook, acknowledging the difficulties his team faced against Fulham in the opening exchanges. He also emphasized his intention to continue working hard to help Chelsea and improve his performance. Joao Pedro has had a significant impact on Chelsea since joining, with each of his last 13 league goals either putting his side ahead or drawing them level.
Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's manager, also addressed the media, confirming an injury to Liam Delap and the expected recovery time. Delap, a Chelsea player, was forced to leave the game due to an injury to his hamstring and is expected to be out for six to eight weeks.
Fulham believed they had taken the lead through Josh King, but the goal was ruled out by VAR. Despite the setback, Fulham will look to bounce back in their next match, having lost five of their last seven Premier League games after going unbeaten in 10 consecutive London derbies.
Joao Pedro expressed his happiness at his performance for Chelsea but emphasized the need for continued hard work to maintain his form. As the season progresses, both teams will aim to improve and challenge for higher positions in the Premier League.
