Children are saved from the sea but their savior drowns
In a heart-wrenching incident, a 55-year-old man from Bühl, Germany, was found dead in Lake Como, northern Italy. The man, known locally for his love of gastronomy and organizing after-work parties, lost his life while attempting to rescue his two children who had fallen overboard.
The incident occurred on a rented boat at Dorio on the eastern shore of Lake Como on Monday. The children were brought to safety, but the father did not resurface. The search for the man was made challenging by adverse weather conditions, but his body was eventually discovered at a depth of approximately 220 meters by a remotely operated underwater robot.
Sadly, this tragedy bears a striking resemblance to a similar accident in July 2024, where a 51-year-old German man died while trying to help his son swim in Lake Como.
Lake Como, one of the deepest lakes in Europe, with a depth of more than 400 meters, is located approximately 80 kilometers north of Milan. Changing winds in the northern part of the lake can generate strong waves, making water activities potentially hazardous.
The news of the man's death has caused a "huge shock" in the city and region, according to Mayor Hubert Schnurr. The man, who had Italian roots, was now available for necessary examinations by the judicial authorities.
The case is receiving attention due to its similarity to the previous accident in Lake Como. The source for this information is dpa. However, there are no search results providing the name of the man from Bühl in Baden-Württemberg who was murdered in Lake Como.
It is suspected that the father was caught in a current, but the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man during this difficult time.
