Chinese Manufacturer Postpones Launch of BE11 Electric SUV in Australia, Citing Need for Key Updates

Skyworth, the Chinese multi-national company known for audio-visual and electronics manufacturing, has announced a delay in the launch of its BE11 medium electric SUV in Australia. Originally scheduled for late 2024, the vehicle is now expected to hit the Australian market in the first half of 2026.

The delay is due to a facelift and technology update of the BE11. The SUV will feature an upgraded 800V electric architecture and improved safety features. It will still come in two highly-specified models, Comfort and Luxury, priced starting below $50,000.

The BE11 will be sold via the franchised dealer model, with 12 outlets expected at launch. Previous plans to sell the vehicle via agency with mycar for servicing have been dropped. The SUV has undergone local ADAS testing to ensure driver assist systems are not overly intrusive.

In comparison, Tesla's Model Y, a rival to the BE11, is larger with dimensions of 4792mm long, 2129mm wide, 1624mm tall, and a 2890mm wheelbase. The BE11 measures 4698mm long, 1908mm wide, 1696mm tall, and has a 2800mm wheelbase. Both models will be mechanically identical, featuring a 150kW front-wheel drive e-motor and an 86kWh NMC battery pack with a 489km range.

Skyworth is not just working on the BE11; the company is also planning to launch a small electric hatchback called Q. Additionally, the next-generation Skywell S233 large commercial van is also on the agenda. Skywell is the commercial van division of Skyworth.

It's worth noting that EV Automotive, which is about to launch the Victory small van and light truck range in Australia, is currently selling Skywell's EC11 van and bus in Australia for about five years. However, the BE11, which was originally intended to launch in Australia under the local EVA 5 badge, is now known as the BE11.

Interestingly, the global chief of Skyworth, Huang Hongsheng (also known as Stephen Wong), has made claims that driving the BE11 cured his diabetes and high blood pressure. While such claims should be taken with a grain of salt, they do highlight the company's commitment to innovation and quality.

EV Automotive CEO Jack Puzin confirmed the delay, stating they are ensuring the vehicle is competitive and adheres to the principles set out when announcing the BE11's arrival in Australia. The company is focused on providing high-quality, affordable electric vehicles to the Australian market.

In conclusion, while the delay of the BE11's launch in Australia is disappointing for some, the updates and improvements being made to the vehicle are likely to make it a strong competitor in the electric SUV market. Stay tuned for more updates on the BE11 and other electric vehicles from Skyworth and EV Automotive.
