Chocolate manufacturer Ritter Sport introduces a novelty: a restricted release of paperback versions.

In a bid to reduce its environmental footprint, German chocolate manufacturer Ritter Sport is testing paper packaging for its Schoko & Gras chocolate, a full milk chocolate with hemp seeds, exclusively available at Austrian supermarket chain Billa.

Katja Binder, Head of Packaging Development at Ritter Sport, leads the project. The test follows a prototype launched in early 2020, and aims to gain insights about how a paper packaging behaves, particularly during automatic packaging, transport, and on the shelf.

The initial test involved 500 bars of the Schoko & Gras chocolate, with lessons learned from that trial leading to the development of a thicker and more robust packaging material for the current test. A total of 35,000 bars of the limited edition chocolate are now available at Billa stores.

Ritter Sport is keen on developing a packaging material made from a renewable and recyclable raw material. The company believes that this test is another step towards paper-based primary packaging.

The test is a practical one, with Ritter Sport evaluating the durability and stability of the paper packaging during transport and storage in vending machines and on Billa store shelves, focusing on maintaining product integrity under these conditions.

Schoko & Gras is not just a product that focuses on innovative packaging, but also on the quality of the product inside. The chocolate, with its unique blend of milk chocolate and hemp seeds, promises a delightful taste experience to consumers.

The test is for a limited edition chocolate, making it a special treat for chocolate lovers who appreciate Ritter Sport's commitment to sustainability and innovation. So, if you're in Austria and a fan of Ritter Sport's Schoko & Gras chocolate, head to your nearest Billa store and grab a bar before they're all gone!
