Citizens of Berlin-Pankow take to the streets in opposition to proposed hotel development
In the late 19th century, Berlin witnessed a significant period of urban expansion and redevelopment, known as the "Bauschlacht" or building battle. This massive undertaking brought together city planners, private real estate developers, architects like Hermann Muthesius, and municipal authorities. One of the most notable results of this first major Berlin building offensive was the construction of tenement buildings in the neighbourhood of Prenzlauer Berg.
Before it became a bustling neighbourhood, Prenzlauer Berg was a village. As the city grew, these tenement buildings stood packed together, their narrow, winding courtyards in between. Typically five stories high, they featured a front building, side wings, and a back building.
Prenzlauer Berg, located in East Berlin, evolved into a classic workers' district. With ten to twelve people often living in one apartment, the neighbourhood was a hub of activity and community.
The Allied bombings during World War II brought devastation but also space and light to Prenzlauer Berg. Today, empty lots serve as poignant reminders of the air raids that once shook the neighbourhood.
In the aftermath of the war, Prenzlauer Berg saw the emergence of post-war DDR architecture, a stark contrast to the old buildings that still stood. Post-reunification, the neighbourhood underwent further changes, with new constructions adding to its unique mix.
Today, Prenzlauer Berg is a vibrant area, filled with cafes boasting bright neon signs, playgrounds, and lush green courtyards. Despite its transformation, the neighbourhood's history remains a significant part of its identity, a testament to Berlin's ever-evolving urban landscape.
