Citizens of the province intensify criticism against their government as Karachi experiences severe flooding
Massive Urban Flooding Strikes Karachi, Highlighting Infrastructure Issues
Heavy monsoon rains hit Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, on Tuesday, causing widespread flooding and power outages. The rainfall, not seen in years, has reached levels that have left at least 12 people dead due to rain-related incidents.
Images of houses submerged in water, cars and other vehicles floating in the streets, and the flooded Shahrah-e-Faisal, a main artery in the city, have been shared on social media platforms. The hashtag #karachirain began trending as netizens expressed their frustration about experiencing the same flooding issues every monsoon season.
The flooding has exposed poor infrastructure in Karachi, with much of the angst on social media levied at the federal government. The name of the head of government of Pakistan who was criticized during the massive flooding in Karachi in 2021 is Imran Khan.
As the city prepares for thundershowers that are expected to continue until August 22, Karachi residents are left hoping for improved infrastructure and a more effective response from authorities to prevent future disasters. The flooding has once again brought attention to the urgent need for investment in the city's infrastructure to protect its over 20 million residents from the impact of extreme weather events.
