Braunschweig City Archive: A Guide to Accessing Historical Documents

The Braunschweig City Archive, located at Schlossplatz 1, North Wing, with barrier-free access via the left side entrance, serves as the primary institution for the preservation and provision of historical documents in the city. The archive is open to the public and is easily accessible via public transportation, with Tram 1 and 5, bus line 420 from the main station, and by car following signs towards the city center or castle. Parking is available in the Schloss-Arkaden parking garage.

The archive's opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm, and Monday and Friday from 10 am to 1 pm. Appointments can be made in advance by email at [email protected] or by phone at 0531 470-4719. It is recommended to inquire about current restrictions on the use of archival materials before a visit, as some microfilm newspapers are currently only partially available due to preservation checks and measures being carried out due to the so-called "vinegar syndrome."

For those unable to visit the archive, a list of microfilm newspapers accessible online through a cooperation with TU Braunschweig can be found here. Some newspapers in the archive are also digitized and available on the PCs in the reading room.

To avoid waiting times, it is recommended to research and pre-order archival materials in advance. Archival materials can be provided at the Braunschweig City Archive at 11 am on Monday and Friday, and at 11 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm on Tuesday to Thursday.

The Braunschweig City Archive plays a significant role in supporting the exhibition in Braunschweig, which is coordinated by the Cultural and Science Department in cooperation with the Memorial Site and Arolsen Archives. These institutions preserve documents related to local history, including that of the National Socialism period.

For further information or inquiries, please contact the Braunschweig City Archive at Tel.: 0531 4704719 (Information/Reading Room), Tel.: 0531 4704711 (Secretariat/Administration), or Fax: 0531 4704725, or send an email to [email protected]. Please note that the availability of individual microfilm newspapers may change weekly or over a longer period.

By following these guidelines, visitors can make the most of their experience at the Braunschweig City Archive and access a wealth of historical documents that tell the story of the city and its people.
