City's pioneering wooden structure is the "Rainbow" daycare center
New Wooden Kindergarten in Schönwalde I/Südstadt District to Open in Greifswald
Greifswald is set to welcome a new addition to its educational facilities with the construction of a modern, sustainable kindergarten. The new kindergarten, named "Regenbogen," will be the first municipal wooden building in the city and is expected to open its doors to children by November 2027.
The construction project, funded by urban development funding and a special-purpose grant from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, will take place in two phases. The first spade will be turned on August 1, 2025, and the demolition of the old kindergarten is scheduled for early 2027, paving the way for the second construction phase.
The new kindergarten will be built on the same plot of land next to the current building in Ernsthofer Wende. It will have a usable area of around 2,000 square meters and will accommodate a total of 172 children - 60 in the nursery and 112 in the kindergarten.
The building is expected to meet the gold standard of the German Sustainable Building Council, but formal certification may be waived by the city council. Sustainable building technology will be used, including a photovoltaic system, green roofs, and a ventilation system with heat recovery. The construction method is based on a wooden frame, with solid wooden ceilings and a natural wooden facade.
By November 2026, modern group rooms for children in the nursery and kindergarten will be created. The fresh kitchen in the new kindergarten will help improve children's diets, influence their eating habits, and provide them with valuable experience in handling food. Retreat rooms and small group offerings in the new kindergarten promote calmness and concentration.
The architect responsible for the new daycare center project "Regenbogen" in Greifswald is from matrix architektur, as indicated in the visualization of the new building for the Kita Regenbogen. After the new kindergartens "Zwergenland" (2020) and "Tausend Farben" (2021), this is already the third new building in the ten-year history of the municipal facility Hanse-Kinder.
The total costs for the new building are around 10 million euros. The completion of the construction is planned for November 2027, marking a significant milestone in the development of early childhood education in Greifswald.
