Civic portal is seeking potential contenders for municipal elections scheduled in September 2025
The city of Essen is gearing up for its local elections on September 14, 2025, with a potential runoff election on September 28. Approximately 3,850 election helpers are needed to ensure a smooth and democratic process.
The local election committee requires a total of 3,500 election helpers for the main election and an additional 3,000 for the potential runoff election. To prepare for their assignment, interested parties can visit the learning platform at https://wahlhelfer.our website/.
The learning platform offers a variety of resources, including video clips, a glossary of terms, and a list of frequently asked questions. It's designed to help volunteers understand their roles and responsibilities effectively.
Election wardens, responsible for leading the election committee, coordinating processes in the polling station during the day, and determining the result from 6 p.m. in the evening, are particularly in demand. A mandatory training session at the Lichtburg on Saturday, 13 September, is required for election wardens.
Record keepers, who keep the minutes during the election day, document the results of the vote counting, and assist in the determination of the result, are also essential to the election process.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and have German or EU citizenship. Participation in the election committee is an important contribution to democracy.
The city offers a reimbursement of between 80 and 130 euros for the voluntary assistance on the election day of the local election, and between 50 and 110 euros for the assistance in the runoff election.
An election team consists of eight persons for the local election and seven persons for the possible runoff election. The polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day.
Persons who have already gained experience in the conduct of elections and are willing to take on responsibility are particularly addressed. Interested parties can apply online at www.our website/wahlhelfer or by phone at 0201 88-12344.
