Clash in Mexico's Senate Chamber: Politicians Physically Altercate, Pushing One Another
In an unprecedented incident, a brawl broke out in Mexico's Senate, involving two prominent political figures - Alejandro 'Alito' Moreno Cárdenas, national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and Gerardo Fernández Noroña, President of the Senate and member of the Morena party.
The incident occurred during a heated debate about US military intervention in Mexico. Moreno approached Noroña to complain he had not been given the floor, and the brawl erupted from there. Both men were seen pushing and shouting at one another, and Noroña's aide was pushed to the floor during the brawl.
Noroña filed a complaint for assault and damage caused during the brawl. He claimed that Moreno started the aggression during the brawl, a claim supported by his aide's report of damage to a cameraman's equipment. Moreno, on the other hand, posted a video on his X account, blaming Noroña for starting the aggression.
The ruling Moreno party accused the PRI and the opposition National Action Party (PAN) of calling for US military intervention. However, it's important to note that this incident is not related to the extradition of 26 cartel members to the US, the Adidas cultural appropriation controversy, or the arrest of a Mexican mayor as part of a cartel training site probe.
Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed regret over the Senate brawl, calling for a return to decorum and respect in the chamber. The brawl followed a heated debate about US military intervention in Mexico, a topic that continues to be a contentious issue in Mexican politics.
It's unclear at this time whether any formal charges will be filed or disciplinary actions taken against either Moreno or Noroña. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the tensions that can arise in politics and the importance of maintaining decorum, even in the face of disagreement.
