Clash of pro-Palestinian protesters during the Venice Film Festival exhibit
In the heart of Venice during the Film Festival, a significant pro-Palestinian demonstration took place on the Lido. The event, known as "Venice 4 Palestine," was initiated by activists who circulated an open letter, signed by approximately 1,500 people, demanding the festival leadership to take a stance on the ongoing Gaza conflict and disinvite Israeli actress Gal Gadot.
The demonstration was sparked by the screening of a film titled "The Voice of Hind Rajab," directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania. The film tells the heart-wrenching story of a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed in the Gaza Strip.
The march began with protesters holding signs reading "Stop the Genocide," echoing the international criticism of the high number of civilian casualties in the Gaza war. Critics have accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in its fight against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. However, it's essential to note that according to the UN Convention, genocide refers to the intent to destroy a particular group, and the Convention does not specify a particular number of civilian casualties that would constitute genocide.
Several groups called for the demonstration, citing perceived support of the Israeli government by some guests of the film festival in the Gaza conflict. The Middle East conflict has been a recurring topic on the sidelines of the film festival.
Giorgos Lanthimos, last year's Golden Lion winner, showed his solidarity by wearing a pin featuring the colours of the Palestinian flag during his appearances at the Venice Film Festival.
The exact number of participants in the protest is uncertain, with the police estimating around 3,000 people. Notably, South Africa has filed a lawsuit with the International Criminal Court over the alleged genocide. The specific charges in South Africa's lawsuit against Israel are currently unknown.
Meanwhile, Israel claims self-defence following the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023. However, it's worth mentioning that Israel has not provided evidence to support its claim of self-defence in the Gaza war.
"The Voice of Hind Rajab" is set to premiere on September 3, promising to shed light on the ongoing conflict and the plight of the Palestinian people. The film's screening and the subsequent demonstration serve as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace and justice in the Middle East.
