Clearance zones for humanitarian aid, containing mines and weaponry

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has issued a funding guideline for humanitarian assistance in mine and explosive ordnance clearance, valid until 2028. This initiative is a crucial part of the Federal Government's Humanitarian Aid strategy.

The priority countries for funding are listed in the annex of the strategy. Non-profit organisations with a "quality profile" for the funding area of humanitarian aid are eligible to apply for project funding. These funds serve civilian purposes and aim to address the humanitarian needs of affected populations.

The clearance of explosive remnants of war, which includes a wide range of explosives such as mines and improvised explosive devices, is a fundamental component of humanitarian aid. The process involves measures like prevention, investigation, detection, and clearance, risk awareness, victim assistance, and advocacy.

Projects must adhere to International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) during the investigation of suspect areas. All projects must also be at least gender-sensitive and consider inclusion.

The goal of humanitarian mine and explosive remnants of war clearance is to enable humanitarian access, thereby protecting vulnerable populations in contaminated areas. This clearance is essential for stabilization, peace consolidation, and sustainable development.

Partner organisations with a quality profile are invited to submit applications in targeted rounds. Applications can be sent to [email protected].

Humanitarian mine and explosive remnants of war clearance is not just a prerequisite for a safer environment, but also a fundamental step towards humanitarian aid and development. It is an investment in the safety and well-being of vulnerable communities around the world.
