Terminated Clergy Member Friedrich of the State Passes Away - Clergy Member Friedrich Passes Away Previously
In a solemn announcement made by a spokesperson for the Bavarian state church, it was confirmed that Johannes Friedrich, the former evangelical state bishop, has passed away at the age of 77 in Nuremberg.
Born in Bielefeld in 1948, Friedrich's career in the church began in Nuremberg where he worked as a student pastor. From 1991 to 1999, he served as dean in the city, and was subsequently elected as state bishop after his tenure as dean. He led the evangelical church in the Free State from 1999 to 2011.
During his tenure, Friedrich was recognised as an ecumenical bridge builder. He actively fostered Christian-Jewish and Christian-Muslim conversations, and was one of the founders of the Alliance for Tolerance in Bavaria. He also participated in dialogues with Muslim believers, and co-led an ecumenical vesper with Pope Benedict XVI in Regensburg Cathedral.
Friedrich's work was marked by a deep personal relationship with God, which was the driving force behind his work. Current state bishop Christian Kopp stated that Friedrich lived out how Christian faith grants the freedom to shape life well. Kopp admired Friedrich's work for being loving, attentive, and goal-oriented.
Notable events during Friedrich's term include the Ecumenical Church Congress that took place in Munich in 2010. He was also known for standing up for a church right in the middle of the world.
After completing his twelve-year term as state bishop, Friedrich continued to serve as a village pastor in Middle Franconia until his retirement. From 2011, he served as pastor and provost of the Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem.
Friedrich's passing has left a significant void in the Bavarian state church and beyond. His legacy as an ecumenical bridge-builder and his dedication to promoting tolerance and dialogue will be remembered.
