Clergy scarcity plagues the Bay Area significantly
In the Transbaikal region of Russia, a shortage of clergy has been reported, even in the largest dioceses. This issue was recently brought to light by Metropolitan Dimitry of Chita and Petrovsk-Zabaikalsk on GTRK "Chita".
The region boasts approximately 200 locations where services are held, including churches, prayer rooms, and chapels. However, the increase in these locations has not been enough to meet the needs of the faithful, as the number of clergy remains insufficient.
Metropolitan Dimitry highlighted that when new churches are constructed, there is a process of finding individuals ready to become priests. He emphasized that this pattern is consistent, suggesting that the construction of new churches in Chita and the regional centers of the region could potentially lead to an increase in those wishing to become priests.
The Transbaikal Theological Seminary is responsible for the training of future priests in the region. Currently, there are seven students enrolled in the seminaries. However, not all students will necessarily be ordained.
Over the past decade, the number of locations where services are held in the Transbaikal region has increased by 70%. Despite this growth, the issue of the shortage of clergy persists and requires attention due to the construction of new churches and the increasing number of faithful.
Metropolitan Dimitry believes it's necessary to continue building new churches in the Transbaikal region. He did not specify the exact number of new churches planned for construction. However, he reiterated that the increase in locations where services are held does not alleviate the problem of the shortage of clergy in the region, which needs to be addressed.
The shortage of clergy in the Transbaikal region is a pressing issue that requires attention due to the construction of new churches and the increasing number of faithful. Metropolitan Dimitry's remarks serve as a call to action, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to train and ordain new priests to meet the spiritual needs of the region's growing community.
