The Wuppertal Opera is embarking on an exciting new venture with the introduction of 'Modular Stage Zero', a project aimed at making music theater productions more sustainable. This innovative approach will be premiered in the 2023/24 season, marking a significant step towards a greener future for the arts.

The project, funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation and the Commissioner for Culture and Media of the Federal Government, involves the development of a reusable modular building block system for the stage. This system is designed to make the handling of theater employees more sustainable and promote exchange with stage designers, other theaters, and the audience.

The first music theater piece to use the modular stage concept, "Stage Zero", will be conducted by Franรงois-Xavier Roth. The premiere is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2023. The opera hopes that the findings from this project can be used to benefit many other stages, as they strive to make a positive impact on the environment.

Rebekah Rota, the designated director, expressed her pleasure at the support received for this project. She also highlighted the opera's commitment to sustainability, as the Wuppertal Theater and Symphony Orchestra GmbH aims for the first climate-neutral music theater production in Wuppertal.

In line with this commitment, the opera is returning to its roots by adapting and reusing stage designs, a practice common in the Baroque period. This approach not only reduces waste but also adds a unique, historic touch to the productions.

The modular stage system is set to be used for several productions in the first season and could become the new production standard for Wuppertal stages. The opera is optimistic that this project will contribute to a more sustainable future for the arts, both locally and beyond.
