Coastal Carolina struggles as Virginia's Cam Ross leads to a dominant first-half performance
In a lopsided affair in Charlottesville, Virginia proved too strong for Coastal Carolina, winning 42-14.
The Cavaliers' offense was in fine form, with J'Mari Taylor leading the charge. Taylor scored on two touchdown runs, adding to his impressive performance. He also contributed in other areas, finishing the game as Virginia's leading rusher with 50 yards.
Quarterback duties were shared between Chandler Morris and MJ Morris. While MJ Morris completed 20 passes for 163 yards and threw an interception, Chandler Morris, a transfer from North Texas, shone in his first game for Virginia. He completed 19 of 27 passes for 264 yards and threw for two touchdowns, connecting with Cam Ross on a 29-yard pass play before halftime and finding Jahmal Edrine for a 2-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left in the first half.
Taylor wasn't the only Virginia player to find the end zone multiple times. Cam Ross also scored twice, including a spectacular 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first half. Harrison Waylee also got on the scoresheet, crossing the line for a touchdown on Virginia's first possession of the second quarter.
Virginia's offense was dominant throughout the game, outscoring Coastal Carolina 361-86 in the first half and maintaining a total offense advantage of 454-335 at the end of the third quarter. Notably, no field goals were kicked in the third quarter, and the score stood at Virginia 35, Coastal Carolina 7.
Coastal Carolina did manage to score a touchdown in the third quarter, with Ja'Vin Simpkins' 8-yard run cutting the deficit to 28 points. However, it was too little, too late for the Chanticleers, who were unable to mount a serious comeback.
Trell Harris had a standout game for Virginia, with 93 yards on three receptions. Will Bettridge also contributed with field goals from 32 and 41 yards.
The head coach for Virginia was Tony Elliott, while Tim Beck led Coastal Carolina. This result will undoubtedly boost Virginia's confidence as they continue their season, while Coastal Carolina will look to regroup and improve in their next game.
