Cologne Police Announce Their Stance Regarding the cancellation of the gathering scheduled for August 30th
In the heart of Cologne, on August 30, 2025, a peaceful assembly on Heumarkt took an unexpected turn as violence erupted.
At around 2:40 PM, participants began to mask themselves and carry unauthorized telescopic iron rods, setting the stage for the day's events. A group of masked individuals wearing black clothing and tied banners later appeared, creating a tense atmosphere.
As the assembly progressed, liaison officers of the police were attacked and injured by a larger group of people within the stopped procession on Mechthildisstraße at around 5:40 PM. This attack triggered a massive intervention of the deployment forces, which prevented worse from happening.
Several objects, including flags, pyrotechnics, helium gas cylinders, paint-filled glass bottles, denatured alcohol, and sparklers, were used during the assembly. These items were found during a search of the baggage wagon, and pyrotechnics were also distributed from the accompanying loudspeaker vehicle and used.
The police stopped the procession again at 4:00 PM due to the distribution and use of pyrotechnics, banners, change of clothing, and gloves. At 4:00 PM, the police stopped the procession in the area of "An der Malzmühle/Am Malzbuchel" due to the reappearance of unauthorized iron rods and wooden planks.
Attempts by individuals from the violent block to wrest weapons from the holsters of the deployed forces failed. However, the attackers managed to steal two multi-purpose batons and deployment materials from the liaison officers. Many police officers were injured during the deployment, including two liaison officers who were attacked and were no longer fit for duty.
Leading Police Director Martin Lotz, as the deployment leader, comments on the events, stating that a block of about 500 people did not adhere to the agreements and gave the assembly an unfriendly character in public perception. Director Lotz also expresses regret over the violent behavior of the approximately 500 people, stating that the right of assembly is an important cornerstone of democracy in their country.
Based on information from mobilization activities, the Cologne Police had made it clear that they would decisively counter violence and unfriendly actions. Director Lotz justifies the determined deployment of the riot police in retrospect.
A parliamentary observer reported being pushed by police officers during the containment, which is currently being investigated. The leader of one of the two merged processions indicated at 3:40 PM that they no longer had complete control over their own assembly. After the flag was removed, individuals from the group set off pyrotechnics at around 3:30 PM.
The group suspected of involvement in the violent clashes in Cologne on August 30, 2025, and claimed to have come from Berlin is not explicitly named in the provided search results.
Director Lotz also states that an independent observer would likely conclude that the arrested group was not interested in protesting peacefully as prescribed by Article 8 of the Basic Law. The police intervened using batons and irritant gas, freed the two police officers, and separated the violent block from the rest of the assembly at around 5:40 PM, restoring order to the proceedings.
