Comic book giants Marvel and DC are set for another crossover event
Marvel and DC Comics are set to join forces once again for a new crossover event, marking the third time these iconic universes have collided. The announcement of this exciting venture was made recently, promising fans a thrilling experience.
The crossover will consist of two one-shots: Marvel/DC and DC/Marvel. Grant Morrison, renowned for his work on titles like All-Star Superman and Batman, has been tapped as writer for DC’s Batman/Deadpool one-shot, with Dan Mora providing the stunning artwork. On the other side, Marvel’s Deadpool/Batman one-shot features variant covers by J. Scott Campbell, Pepe Larraz, and Esad Ribić. Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Joshua Williamson team up to write a Constantine and Doctor Strange team-up, with art by Hayden Sherman.
Longtime comics fans may recall previous crossovers between Marvel and DC in the 1970s and 80s. However, this new event differs from those earlier collaborations. Unlike the Amalgam Age comics, which fused heroes together to create characters like Dark Claw (Wolverine and Batman) and Wonder Woman (Storm), or the reader-voted matchups in the Amalgam Age comics, the heroes in this crossover will fight to save each other's worlds instead of their own or a combined version.
One of the previous crossovers between Marvel and DC was JLA/Avengers, which was published in 2003. George Pérez and Kurt Busiek collided the worlds of Marvel and DC in this comic, where the heroes of both universes came to the belief that each other was terrible at protecting their home dimensions. The republishing of JLA/Avengers could be to help set the foundation for the new Marvel and DC crossover.
It's worth noting that JLA/Avengers is not part of the crossovers that took place in the 1970s and 80s, nor is it part of the late 90s comics like DC Versus Marvel or Amalgam Age. In the late 90s, there were DC Versus Marvel and Amalgam Age comics where heroes fought each other.
The merged universe from the Amalgam Age comics was later canonized as Earth-9602 for Marvel and Earth-496 for DC. (Or Earth-1996 for both.) This unique universe, however, will not be featured in the upcoming crossover event. Instead, the teams in this new crossover will be fighting to protect their own worlds.
The approval for JLA/Avengers was given as early as 1979, but the exact details of the new crossover event have yet to be revealed. Fans can expect more information on the crossover event to be announced this year.
As the comics world eagerly awaits the release of this new crossover event, one thing is certain: the creative minds behind these iconic characters are sure to deliver a thrilling story that will captivate fans old and new alike.
