Committee applauds widely appreciated outdoor excursion at prominent park

The Volkspark in Marl is undergoing a transformation, with several new facilities and renovations planned to turn it into a climate park. The Environmental Protection and Sustainability Office, led by Andrea Baudek and Lukas Bachmann, recently guided a tour of the park to share the latest developments.

The established paths in the Volkspark are already quite visible, and new paths and trees have been planted, particularly at the former Volkspark stadium of SpVg. Marl. In the southern part of the park, a volleyball field, basketball hoops, and a calisthenics area will soon be available for public use.

A significant part of the park's renovation involves the creation of a "Climate Band" of natural stones that leads towards the playing area. This eco-friendly feature adds a unique touch to the park's design.

The meeting also discussed the council's decision regarding the fate of two pulley wheels from the support tower AV Schacht 3. The administration has been tasked with finding an alternative location and contacting RAG-Stiftung to discuss a possible cost takeover. The pulley wheels, with a diameter of around seven meters and weighing more than seven tons, are complex to install, but their new home may soon be found at the roundabouts on Carl-Duisberg-Straße.

The high-voltage line project, which has been a topic of concern for many, will now touch the Arenberg Forest at the edge significantly less than in the initial plan. The preferred corridor for the line, as per Amprion's plans, runs along the Old Hervester Way to the Marl-Frentrop motorway interchange, then southwest along the A52 motorway. This shift allows the Schwatter Jans industrial area to be further developed.

For those interested in learning more about the current planning status of the high-voltage line project, a citizen information market will take place in Marl on September 4, 2025. The event will take place at Flurstraße 65, 45772 Marl, and no registration is required. Amprion employees will be available for discussion between 10 am and 1 pm.

The renovation of the Volkspark is expected to cost approximately 60,000 euros, including transport costs. The first seating options made from the concrete elements of the former tribune were visible, indicating the park's gradual transformation into a modern, eco-friendly, and community-focused space.

As the renovation progresses, the Volkspark is set to become a hub for recreation, sustainability, and community engagement in Marl. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project.
