Communist Party Calls for Immediate Elections by CA Yunus, Criticizes Shift Towards Reforms

In a fiery speech at the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Chattogram district's 13th conference on 5 September, the party's central leader, MM Akash, expressed concern over the delay in the national election and accused the interim government of prioritising reforms over restoring democracy.

Akash questioned Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus's agenda, claiming that he is only considering elections under pressure. The leader alleged that the interim government is focusing on "long reform documents, foreign agreements, and indirect political maneuvers" instead of preparing for polls.

Akash criticized past compromises made by the Awami League, asserting that these compromises have enabled anti-liberation forces to regain influence. He urged Yunus to step aside if he cannot deliver, mentioning February as a possible timeframe for elections.

The CPB leader also expressed his concern that Yunus's activities have created doubt over whether elections will take place at all. Akash reaffirmed that the party would continue to defend the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War and called for a national election without delay.

During his speech, Akash referred to Yunus's recent trip to London, where he met BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, raising concerns about the chief adviser's allegiances. He claimed that Yunus's activities have been detrimental to the country's democratic process.

"Your reforms and judicial initiatives are not restoring public confidence," Akash said, emphasising the people's expectation for an election. The expectation, according to Akash, was clear - they wanted an election.

The CPB has called for a national election without delay, vowing to oppose external powers seeking control over Bangladesh's ports and resources. The party reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the principles of the 1971 Liberation War and ensuring a free and fair election in the country.
