In the picturesque town of Tullamore, Co Offaly, a sombre annual event took place this year. Friends and family gathered to remember Fiona Pender, a woman who has been missing for 29 years.

Fiona, who was seven months pregnant at the time of her disappearance, was last seen at her flat on Church Street in Tullamore on 23 August 1996. Since then, her case has been shrouded in mystery, casting a shadow over her home town.

Over the years, Fiona's mother, Josephine, campaigned tirelessly for a breakthrough in the case. She continuously appealed for information to find her daughter, but arrests made in 1997 unfortunately led to no charges being brought. To this day, there is no publicly confirmed current prime suspect in the case.

The case was long suspected to involve murder, with a chief suspect, but both avenues of inquiry had to be "closed off". Gardaiฬ have taken over 300 statements and gathered thousands of documents as part of their investigation into Fiona's disappearance. However, nothing useful was found in either search.

Additional searches have taken place at various locations since Fiona was last seen. In May this year, searches took place at bogland in Killeigh and in the Slieve Bloom mountains, close to Clonaslee. Yet, despite these efforts, Fiona remains missing.

The case was initially a missing persons investigation, but it has since taken on a different significance. A memorial has been erected along the Grand Canal in Tullamore in memory of Fiona. This year, the memorial served as the starting point for 'Fiona's Way', a 4.5km loop walk in her memory.

The annual walk is a poignant reminder of the impact Fiona's disappearance has had on her community. The person referred to is from the midlands and emigrated from Ireland. Her disappearance has left a lasting impression on those who knew her, and her memory lives on through this annual event.

As the years pass, the hope for a resolution in Fiona's case fades, but her friends and family continue to remember her and keep her memory alive. The mystery of Fiona Pender's disappearance remains unsolved, but her story serves as a reminder of the enduring power of hope and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
