Competitor Ultrahuman guarantees 100% sales of US Ring Air devices from Texas, defying Oura's objections in ITC proceedings
In a heated legal battle, smart ring manufacturers Ultrahuman and Oura are locked in a patent infringement case at the International Trade Commission (ITC). Despite the ongoing lawsuit, Ultrahuman continues its operations, refusing to back down from the fight.
Oura, in a recent blog post, praised the U.S. patent system and its team members, while criticising the tactics of foreign competitors. The company is attempting to stop Ultrahuman and other smart ring makers from selling or importing their products in the United States.
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is also mentioned in the ITC filing as a competing brand. In response, Ultrahuman has disputed the initial findings, claiming that 70% of such proceedings result in the invalidation of all challenged claims. The company's claims of having a manufacturing facility in Texas, however, have been questioned, with suggestions of Photoshopped images.
Ultrahuman, undeterred, claims its Texas facilities as the "first-ever Smart ring manufacturing facility" in the United States. The company partnered with Freyr Battery in November 2021 to build the "UltraFactory" in Plano, Texas. This facility, currently producing 400 Ring Air units per day, is expected to create hundreds of high-skilled jobs in Plano.
By the end of 2025, Ultrahuman aims to produce 500,000 Ring Air devices per year in its Texas "UltraFactory." The company plans to scale up production to more than 1,370 Ring Air units per day, ensuring faster shipping, better service, and increased reliability for American consumers.
In a strategic move, Ultrahuman has no plans to cede its U.S. smart ring business just yet, despite the ITC ruling. Instead, the company plans to "double down" on U.S. sales rather than preemptively accept the ruling. Both smart ring brands seem to value appearing "American" during this legal battle.
The ITC filing also notes that Oura and Samsung Galaxy Ring have the manufacturing capability to replace RingConn and Ultrahumanโs products if they are excluded from the U.S. market. Ultrahuman, however, remains committed to its American operations and the future of its smart ring business in the United States.
