Computer Vision Company Founder and CEO Sebastian Bauer Interviewed on Ubicept
Ubicept: Revolutionizing Single-Photon Imaging Technology
Ubicept, a cutting-edge technology company, is making waves in the field of single-photon imaging. Founded by engineer Sebastian Bauer, the company has seen significant growth since its inception, thanks to advancements that have improved the quality and runtime of its technology up to a staggering 1,000,000 times.
The idea for Ubicept came together during Bauer's time in Madison, while he was researching Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs). After his stint at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he moved to MIT, where Ubicept was further developed.
Currently, Ubicept is in the seed stage, with additional funding on the horizon. However, details about the company's current financing situation remain undisclosed. Despite these challenges, Bauer and his team are forging ahead, facing the "rough" and uncertain journey of building a company with determination and resilience.
Ubicept's core product is a suite of algorithms designed to convert single photon detections into conventional video output, running efficiently on off-the-shelf compute hardware. One of their most significant milestones was the introduction of the FLARE camera, a 1-megapixel single-photon sensing device.
The FLARE camera, short for Flexible Light Acquisition and Representation Engine, boasts a 1-megapixel colour SPAD camera sensor. This technology allows for SPADs to be synchronized with active lighting like lasers and LEDs, and for such configurations, Ubicept has algorithms to make the system see through fog or dust and detect moving objects.
Ubicept's algorithms work exceptionally well with conventional sensors but are specifically designed for single-photon image sensor hardware. The company differentiates itself from its competition due to its research background and knowledge of working with specific sensors, gained before they became widely available.
Looking to the future, Ubicept's goal is to get its processing algorithms on as many cameras as possible. With its innovative technology and unwavering dedication, Ubicept is poised to revolutionize the field of single-photon imaging.
