Spiegel Deputy Editor-in-Chief Melanie Amann to Leave Publication

Melanie Amann, a prominent journalist and deputy editor-in-chief at the Hamburg news magazine "Spiegel", has announced her departure from the publication at the end of this year. This decision comes after a series of events that unfolded over the past year.

Aman's responsibilities in political reporting and the management of the Berlin office were removed by the new editor-in-chief, Dirk Kurbjuweit, in the summer of 2023. She was also relieved of her role in coordinating investigative research as part of a power struggle that ensued after Kurbjuweit took over the position.

The initial attempt to get rid of Amann occurred in the summer of the previous year, but she secured the backing of the employee KG. However, the relationship between Amann and Kurbjuweit deteriorated following these changes, leading to Amann's eventual decision to leave "Der Spiegel".

Aman expressed gratitude for her twelve years at the "Spiegel" editorial office, calling it an "honor and pleasure" to have been active in the "house of Rudolf Augstein". She will remain an author of the editorial office until her departure.

Kurbjuweit, in a press release, praised Amann's work, particularly her fearless reporting on the AfD and her representation of the "Spiegel" in talk shows and podcasts. He also wished her "all the best" for her future.

The "Spiegel" confirmed Amann's departure in the same press release, thanking her for her work. The reasons for Kurbjuweit's actions are unclear, but he may have wanted to break with the personnel policy of his predecessor.

Recently, Amann announced her intention to do a study stay at Harvard University from October. The amicable nature of the separation was emphasized internally.

In the summer of 2024, Kurbjuweit appointed Cordula Meyer as his deputy, but the problems between him and Amann remained unresolved. Initially, Amann was not reachable for comment on the news website. However, following an investigation by an external website, the "Spiegel" confirmed Amann's departure.

Aman felt duped by Kurbjuweit due to these changes. Despite this, she remains a respected figure in German journalism, and her contributions to "Der Spiegel" will be missed.
