In the heart of Rhineland-Palatinate, a significant development is underway. A new bike path, scheduled for completion in February 2026, is being constructed to provide a space-saving, climate-friendly, and cost-effective alternative to cars for short and medium distances.

This upcoming bike path, a joint initiative by the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of Transport, Daniela Schmitt, and the Mayor of Worms, Adolf Kessel, will serve as a commuting option for residents. The path, spanning 4.1 kilometers, will lead from the Worms city center via Weinsheim to Wiesoppenheim.

The new bike path is part of a larger plan, the commuter bike route "Upper Rhine" between Worms and Ludwigshafen. It will act as a feeder route, creating safe connections to schools, kindergartens, and residential areas.

The construction work is estimated to take about six months. Funding for the project is provided by the special program "Town and Country" of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV), amounting to approximately 2.3 million euros.

In a nature reserve section of about 2.5 kilometers, the path will be built slightly narrower. In some parts, the bike path will run parallel to the Eisbach. For the riders' safety and comfort, the bike path will have a paved width of three meters, with a half-meter-wide shoulder on each side.

Minister Schmitt stated that commuting bike routes are necessary for cycling to become a genuine alternative in everyday life. The new bike path section between Worms and Wiesoppenheim, planned to be completed in 2026, is intended to connect to the town of Zellertal.

This exciting development is just one step towards promoting a greener, more active, and more sustainable lifestyle in Worms and the surrounding areas. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this project!
