Construction issues causing town hall schedule to be pushed back

The renovation of the new city hall has encountered a delay, with the expected handover date now pushed back from December 1, 2025, to mid-September 2026. This delay has been highlighted by Mayor Frank Stein as unfortunate but not uncommon for projects of this size and complexity.

The delay is primarily due to unforeseen construction challenges during the renovation work. After the gutting of the existing building, structural and technical problems have emerged, necessitating further planning and additional construction measures. The landlord, who recently acquired the property, is responsible for these additional construction measures.

Melissa Kemmerling, project management for the New City Hall, has emphasised that the city's preparations for the future occupancy are proceeding as planned. This includes digitization, e-file introduction, and organisational and technical equipment of the new work environment. Preparations for new wall positions in the building have recently begun.

The city administration is cooperating with the owner to advance the project, despite the delays. No new information about the change of ownership or coordination and handoffs between project partners is provided.

The report, expected to be presented to political bodies in the fourth quarter of 2025, aims to present project progress, provide background information on the delay, and explain the next steps. It is also expected to highlight the potential benefits of the project for the city's perspective and development.

Mayor Stein remains committed to creating a modern, digital, and citizen-friendly administrative location with the New City Hall. The report will serve as a comprehensive status update on the project, providing transparency and clarity to the community.
