Construction of a new school in the Ruhr region
The city of Ruhr has taken a significant step towards providing a modern learning environment for its students with the groundbreaking ceremony for a new primary school on Mintarder Weg in Kettwig. Scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2027, the new school will accommodate approximately 220 students.
The decision to demolish the existing school and build a new one was made in August 2020, following the discovery of tetrachloroethene in the school building and the soil. The city commissioned the administration to plan a new two-winged primary school, and the project was entrusted to architect Marius Scheffer, who designed the "Schule an der Ruhr" at Ruhr.
The new school complex consists of four interconnected structures, with a central building serving as the hub. It will feature open all-day areas, a gymnasium, an auditorium as a community center, a schoolyard, and additional rooms for teaching, technology, and administration. The city is investing approximately 24 million euros in the new construction.
Classes were temporarily relocated to a container at Gustavstraße 26 annex while the new school was being planned and built. The new school aims to harness digital opportunities, foster creative minds, and teach responsibility. It is designed to be a place where children learn together, grow through projects, and form friendships during breaks.
The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by Mayor Thomas Kufen, Muchtar Al Ghusain, Director of Youth, Education, and Culture, and other stakeholders on 05.09.2025. The school's completion date and new design are yet to be announced. However, it is certain that Ruhr's students will soon have a modern, safe, and inspiring learning environment to call their own.
