New Research Laboratory to Boost Fundamental Interactions Studies in Hamburg

The Hamburg Fundamental Interactions Laboratory (HAFUN), a new research facility, is set to be built in the Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. With an impressive 6,400 square meters of usable space, HAFUN aims to foster interdisciplinary cooperation among scientists.

HAFUN will accommodate around 200 scientists from experimental physics, particularly in the fields of particle and astroparticle physics, as well as nonlinear quantum optics. The laboratory will serve as an instrument for gravitational wave research and cosmic radiation, contributing significantly to the understanding of the universe.

The laboratory's goal is to answer central questions of particle and astroparticle physics using state-of-the-art infrastructure and gain new insights into the universe. It is also associated with the field of quantum technology.

The federal government is providing over 34 million euros in co-financing for HAFUN. The Hamburg Senate has approved the construction of HAFUN in a tenant-landlord model and included it in the 2025/26 budget.

HAFUN will be directly connected to other research institutions such as DESY and the physics building of the University of Hamburg (UHH). It will also serve as a workplace and research hub for the Hamburg Excellence Cluster Quantum Universe.

Construction of HAFUN is expected to create another "hub for internationally visible top research". For more detailed information, visit the websites desy.de and sciencecity.hamburg. The press release provides further information about HAFUN.

At present, there is no information available about the leader or the person responsible for the leadership of the "Hamburg Fundamental Interactions Laboratory."

HAFUN is a part of the Science category and is associated with the topic of investment. It is set to be a significant addition to the scientific community, facilitating groundbreaking research and advancing our understanding of the universe.
