Construction of the disputed coastal highway: "Significant achievement" secured

In a significant development, the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, Northern Division's Lüneburg branch, in collaboration with the city of Lüneburg, has announced plans for new sections of the A20 highway. The plan approval documents for this project have been publicly available since August 20, 2025.

Environmental considerations are at the forefront of this project. To ensure minimal impact on the landscape, the landscape architecture firm Bunk & Münch Landschaftsarchitekten has been involved. The detailed planning process focuses on mitigating ecological effects, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

The A20 highway extension has been a long-awaited project. For over ten years, the coastal motorway coming from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has ended in Schleswig-Holstein, east of Bad Segeberg.

The construction process will begin with the building of individual bridge and crossing structures before the new route itself is constructed. The first construction section in Lower Saxony for the motorway A20 is expected to take six years.

However, the project has not been without controversy. In 2013, the Federal Administrative Court halted the further construction of this motorway due to insufficient consideration of bat protection. The BUND, an environmental organisation, opposed the plan approval decision from 2018 with a lawsuit, resulting in a revised decision.

More recently, the Federal Administrative Court dismissed two complaints against the planned construction of a new Elbtunnel in Glückstadt, district of Steinburg.

Despite these challenges, the project is moving forward. A speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour will apply at the future motorway junction near Westerstede. The Segeberger Kalkberghöhlen, considered the largest bat hibernation site in Germany, will be taken into account during the construction process.

The plan approval procedures for further construction sections in Lower Saxony are still open, indicating that this project is far from completion. The A20 highway extension promises to bring significant changes to the transportation infrastructure in Germany, and the public will continue to follow its progress with interest.
