Construction Process Unfolding: Lux under Development

The infrastructure project "Luxembourg Avenue," aimed at making Luxembourg Street more attractive and livable, is currently in its second phase in Hürth-Hermülheim, Germany.

The construction work, which was initially planned to end at Severinus Street, has been extended to cover the section from Luxembourg Street 315 to the AOK Street. This expansion includes the laying of the new road surface between Horbeller Street and the AOK Street.

The demolition work on the former AOK building commenced in early July 2025. To minimize the impact on the project schedule, the demolition concept has been adjusted. The building wing at the AOK square will be demolished and the site filled first, followed by section-by-section dismantling "from front right to back left." The completion of this demolition work is currently scheduled for the end of January 2026.

Hazardous waste remediation in the AOK building is currently underway and is expected to be completed by mid-September. Meanwhile, work on the open spaces, sidewalks, and the new bike lane on the west side began in mid-July.

In addition to the city of Hürth, the European Union, and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the financing for the "Luxembourg Avenue" project also comes from the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building and the NRW Ministry for Home Affairs, Local Government, Building and Digitalization, totalling 7,971,413 euros.

The Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the state of NRW also provides funding for the project. Furthermore, an additional 171,600 euros in funding has been provided for the planned bike lane from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) as project sponsor for the federal special program "City and Country."

Main and supply lines, along with their connecting lines, have been laid on the west side of Luxembourg Street between Horbeller Street and Fritz-Räcke Street. Work is underway to create all new canal house connections.

Occasionally, archaeological artifacts or potential ordnance discoveries have required minor adjustments to the construction schedule. However, overall, the "Luxembourg Avenue" project is on schedule.

The "Luxembourg Avenue" project aims to make Luxembourg Street more attractive and livable, and with the ongoing construction work, the residents of Hürth-Hermülheim can look forward to a revitalized streetscape in the near future.
