Construction progresses on the Murrtal viaduct in Backnang
The Ministry of Transport in Stuttgart is overseeing a significant project aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion on one of the region's busiest roads, Federal Highway 14 (B 14). The project, which includes the construction of the Murrtal Viaduct, is expected to be completed in stages over the next few years.
The Murrtal Viaduct, a central part of the B 14 expansion from Nellmersbach to Backnang-West, is currently under construction. The eastern section of the viaduct is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, with the western section to follow in 2026. The noise barrier for the Murrtal Viaduct is also expected to be completed in spring 2026.
The expansion of B 14 aims to address several issues, including reducing traffic congestion, lowering accident risks, and decreasing noise and exhaust emissions. Hermann Klyeisen, deputy head of the mobility department in the State Presidency of Stuttgart, stated that they are currently managing a mammoth project in and around Backnang.
The project is divided into nine construction phases. Three phases - up to Waldrems, the Backnang-Mitte interchange, and the Murrtal Viaduct West side - have already been completed. Planning for the Backnang-South interchange is underway, with construction expected to begin as early as summer 2027.
The federal government is investing around 23.7 million euros in the new Murrtal Viaduct East. This investment is part of a larger effort to strengthen one of the most important traffic axes in the Stuttgart/Rems-Murr economic region. The four-lane expansion of B 14 is expected to be completed by 2030.
Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann recently observed the progress of the work on the bridge during a visit to the construction site. He expressed his confidence in the project's ability to create more safety for the residents of Backnang and the surrounding region. The Murrtal Viaduct will relieve local traffic and bundle it on the bypass axis, improving overall traffic flow and reducing congestion.
For more information about the project, you can contact the Ministry of Transport's Press Office or Citizen Representative. Search results do not currently provide information on the head of the mobility department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the federal state of Stuttgart or who oversees the construction of the new section of B 14 between Nellmersbach and Backnang-West.
The Murrtal Viaduct East will complement the existing western viaduct in the future, creating a seamless bypass for traffic and further improving the region's transportation infrastructure. The project is a testament to Stuttgart's commitment to modernizing its transportation system and ensuring the safety and convenience of its residents and visitors.
