Hittin' the Jackpot in Happy Valley: A Closer Look at the Upcoming Casino Expansion in Pennsylvania

Construction is kicking off at the old Macy's spot in Nittany Mall, set to transform into the upbeat, carefree Happy Valley Casino!

Last week, the Casino unveiled its official moniker and branding. Eric Pearson, CEO and overseer of Happy Valley Casino, envisions the inclusion of 750 slot machines, 30 table games, and two tasty dining options to breathe new life into the mall.

"We're betting on it as one of the only things that can trigger some meaningful revitalization and fresh vibes for the Nittany Mall area," Pearson declared.

Reservations have cropped up, with individuals voicing worries over the parking lot's state and concerns that the casino's close proximity to Penn State University might indirectly appeal to college students.

Boosting a long and impressive history, Happy Valley Casino is being developed by SC Gaming LLC— spearheaded by Ira Lubert, a Penn State alum and former chair of the university's board of trustees. The facility will offer an outstanding selection of gambling options, plus a sit-down restaurant and fast-food eatery. Although exact completion dates remain under wraps, early 2026 is anticipated for the grand opening.

SC Gaming has partnered with Saratoga Casino Holdings LLC for the project, subject to any required regulatory approvals. A conversation with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will determine whether the casino will go ahead as planned.

As college towns go, Happy Valley could experience increased traffic and the potential negative effects on existing businesses. On the plus side, it will serve as a stimulus for regional growth and development, bringing in more cash flow and formidable entertainment attractions for locals and tourists alike. The new casino adds another string to the already thriving bow of Penn State's college town setting.
