Construction project: Two segments of HOWOGE to be leased for residential use, providing 315 new homes
In the heart of Berlin, two renowned housing organisations, HOWOGE and degewo, are jointly constructing 583 new residential units in Lichtenberg and Treptow-Köpenick. This ambitious project, named Lückstraße, promises to deliver apartments with housing allowance (WBS) and regulated rents, making affordable housing a reality for many.
The Lückstraße project is not just about providing homes; it's about creating a sustainable future. The power for these new homes will be sourced primarily from photovoltaic systems installed on green roofs, air-water heat pumps, and certified green power from the network. This move towards renewable energy sources is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting a greener city.
In Treptow-Köpenick, the Lückstraße project is part of a larger, car-free quarter that is being carefully designed and built. This eco-friendly quarter will also feature rainwater infiltration areas, playgrounds, and over 300 parking spaces for bicycles and cargo bikes, encouraging a shift towards more sustainable modes of transport.
HOWOGE CEO, Ulrich Schiller, has hailed the Lückstraße project as a demonstration of how affordable housing can be combined with climate-friendly construction. The project's commitment to sustainability is further evident in the fact that all roofs in the Treptow-Köpenick quarter will be equipped with photovoltaic systems.
The Lückstraße project also includes provisions for social carriers, allocating three apartments for this purpose. Furthermore, half of the new apartments in Treptow-Köpenick will be built barrier-free, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all.
The Lückstraße project's commitment to sustainability extends to its outdoor spaces as well. Climate-adapted outdoor areas, inner courtyards with fruit and herb plantations, and large bicycle parking areas with over 1,000 spaces are all part of the plan.
The first project by HOWOGE that is entirely fossil fuel-free is being built in Lückstraße, Lichtenberg. The overall completion of the Treptow-Köpenick quarter is planned for September 2026, marking a significant milestone in Berlin's journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.
