Fire at Concrete Works in Schmölln: Two Children Hospitalized
On August 31, 2025, at 15:43 hours, the police in Altenburger Land were called to assist at the concrete works in Schmölln due to a smoke emission. Numerous calls reported a strong smoke emission at the site, prompting immediate response.
Upon arrival, a full-blown fire was confirmed. The fire brigade swung into action, and the Crimmitschauer Straße was fully closed for the extinguishing operations. Traffic was rerouted via the Lohsenstraße.
In the vicinity of the fire, two children, aged 9 and 10, with soot-stained faces and breathing difficulties were found. They were immediately taken to the hospital for examination.
The exact circumstances of the fire are still being investigated by the criminal police, but it is believed that the two children may have been directly linked to the outbreak of the fire. The police dispatched patrol units from Altenburg and the Criminal Police Gera to the Crimmitschauer Straße. Forces of the Federal Police Gera also assisted with the cordoning-off measures.
On Monday morning, the site of the fire was examined by fire cause investigators. The investigation is being conducted by the criminal police, but as of now, no specific name has been disclosed.
The Crimmitschauer Straße was reopened at 02:40 hours on August 31, 2025. The fire brigade declared the fire extinguished at 02:00 hours.
