Construction site tour featuring avant-garde development projects
In the heart of Aachen, the former AOK building is being demolished as part of the urban development project Lebensader Lux. This demolition presents an opportunity for the city administration and RWTH Aachen University to collaborate on a unique recycling project.
The city administration was tasked with conducting an inventory of potentially reusable materials in large demolition projects like the AOK building. Selected materials such as metal elements, handrails, floor grates, bricks, windows, and benches from the former AOK building will be used in a research project called the European Target-X project.
An interdisciplinary research team is working on the construction site of the future as part of the European Target-X project. This project, coordinated by the Center Construction Robotics, involves a consortial alliance of international industrial companies and cross-faculty institutes within RWTH Aachen University. The aim is to develop intelligent processes, machines, and business models across the entire construction value chain.
It's important to note that the project does not involve the construction of a modern building, a new plaza, or high-quality amenities on the site of the former AOK building. Instead, the city of Aachen, RWTH Aachen, and Construction Robotics are focusing on recycling materials from the demolition.
The initiative for the recycling project at the former AOK building is based on a resolution passed by the Planning Committee in December 2023. Since economic resale was not feasible in this case, a cooperation with RWTH Aachen was agreed upon. The principles of sustainability and sensible reuse were aligned in this cooperation.
Components from HuΜrth will serve as a practical basis for innovative research and teaching approaches in the European Target-X project. It's worth mentioning that the project is not connected with any specific organization mentioned earlier, such as Lifeline Lux, Center Construction Robotics GmbH, Concular Academy, or Rhiem & Sohn Kies and Sand GmbH & Co. KG.
Potentially hazardous materials found during the demolition were disposed of properly. The city of Aachen ensures the safety and environmental responsibility of all its projects.
In the coming months, a modern building and a new plaza with a water feature, green spaces, and high-quality amenities will be constructed on the site of the former AOK building. The recycling project serves as a testament to Aachen's commitment to sustainability and innovative practices in urban development.
