The city of Giessen is experiencing a temporary change in traffic flow due to construction works on Aulweg. Starting from March 24, 2025, Aulweg will be closed to traffic in one direction between Leihgesterner Weg and Wartweg.

The construction site, managed by Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG), is installing new district heating lines. This is part of the second phase of the construction, which started at the end of March 2025. During this period, the road between Leihgesterner Weg and Wartweg will remain closed to traffic in one direction.

The unexpected discovery of an old slide valve of a water pipe has caused the construction works to take longer than planned, extending the total construction time by two months, ending in September 2025.

In the opposite direction, a detour via Ludwigstraße is provided and signposted. Aulweg will only be accessible in the direction of Schubertstraße during this time. Until April 11, only the lane in the direction of Leihgesterner Weg will be available in the affected area.

The traffic regulations will remain in effect until the end of July 2025. The closures are necessary due to the expansion of the district heating network by SWG and house connections for a hotel, as well as district heating and electricity.

Ulli Boos, spokesperson for SWG, explains that the modernization is being carried out to save costs and reduce the risk of damage. The aging component requires an exchange in the foreseeable future. The authority responsible for the implementation of the second construction phase of the modernization of the hot water supply lines in Aulweg is the local municipal building department.

SWG will also be laying corresponding lines in Aulweg starting from March 24. The first closure, which was not coordinated with the city's construction measure in this area due to technical reasons, has already taken place.

The second closure is due to SWG's work on house connections for a hotel. The construction works are scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2025. The unexpected repairs are expected to extend the total construction time by two months, ending in September 2025.
