In the heart of Gießen, a significant change is coming to the city's public transportation system. From August 18 to early October 2025, nine bus lines (2, 3, 7, 12, 13, 800, 801, 802, and the Venus night bus) will be diverted due to the closure of Neustadt Street. This closure is part of a larger project to connect customers in Neustadt Street to the district heating network.
Neustadt Street is an important connection to the central bus stop in Gießen, the "Market Square". However, during the works, only lines 2, 5, 9 (taxi line), and 15 will serve the "Market Square" stop. The "Bahnhofstraße" stop will not be served; instead, the lines will stop at the "Katharinenstraße" and "City-Center" stations.
Local public transport experts at SWG expect delays due to the massive disruption to traffic management. Transfers at the "Market Square" will be temporarily unavailable; connections will be found at the "Berliner Platz" stop or the "Government Center" stop. A detour has been set up and signposted for through traffic.
Ulli Boos, SWG spokesperson, stated that they are taking steps to minimize inconvenience for residents, businesses, and adjacent businesses. Residents, property owners, suppliers delivering goods to the Neustadt Center, and construction workers will have free access to the construction site.
SWG is also taking the opportunity to renew a portion of the street lighting at the same time. The main pipeline runs on the other side of the street, requiring lane-crossing trenches. The work is expected to be completed by early October.
For up-to-date information on current bus diversions, call 0641 708-1400, visit SWG's website, or contact the RMV Mobility Centre in Gießen at the SWG Customer Centre on the market square. Email inquiries can be sent to mobizentrale@stadtwerke-our website.
Ulli Boos asks all passengers to plan for additional time and apologizes for any inconvenience. Lines 3, 7, 12, 13, 800, 801, 802, and the Venus night bus will serve the "Mühlstraße" stop in the West Annex and the "Johanneskirche" stop in the South Annex as alternatives. The Oswaldsgarten stop is discontinued during this period.
Stay informed and plan your journey accordingly to ensure a smooth transition during this period of construction.
