Consumers Warning Against Use of Glitzy, Metallic, and Risky Steering Wheel Badges from Brand Sparkley
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a warning against the use of aftermarket steering wheel decals, citing potential safety risks during vehicle crashes. These decorative emblems, often made of metal or plastic and adorned with rhinestones or other shiny decorations, can pose a significant danger if deployed in a crash.
In a recent incident, a driver suffered severe injuries when a metal piece from a dislodged aftermarket steering wheel decal was sent into their face and neck during a crash. Another case resulted in a driver losing sight in one eye after the rhinestone-adorned decal dislodged and struck them in the face.
The NHTSA's warning applies to all vehicle makes and models, emphasising the importance of safety over decoration. Consumers are urged to avoid purchasing aftermarket steering wheel decals and are advised to remove any such decals they have already applied to their steering wheels.
The use of these decals can potentially cause the air bag to malfunction, as any alterations or changes to the air bag or its cover can have this effect. Unlike permanently affixed emblems on a vehicle's steering wheel, aftermarket decals can easily become dislodged when the air bag deploys, turning the decal into a projectile.
It's important to note that there are no publicly known vehicle manufacturers specifically linked to injuries caused by the use of aftermarket steering wheel covers. However, to maintain safety standards and prevent potential malfunctions during a crash, consumers are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are in their original, unaltered condition.
The NHTSA is urging consumers to prioritise safety over decoration and avoid using aftermarket steering wheel decals due to the risk of injury during a crash. By doing so, drivers can help ensure their own safety and the safety of their passengers on the road.
