Contents of the time capsule buried by Princess Diana in 1991 have been discovered after 34 years
In 1991, Princess Diana made a unique contribution to history by burying a time capsule at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. The capsule, intended to remain sealed for hundreds of years, has been unearthed recently due to new hospital construction.
The contents of the time capsule offer a fascinating glimpse into the 1990s, a period dominated by pop culture icons like Kylie Minogue. Among the items found is a CD of Minogue's Rhythm of Love album, a testament to the popularity of the pop princess during that era.
The time capsule was conceived as part of the BBC's Blue Peter television show, and two children, David Watson and Sylvia Foulkes, were chosen to pick 10 items to put in the capsule. These items included a solar-powered calculator, a pocket television, a newspaper, a collection of British coins, a container with tree seeds, a piece of recycled paper, and a photo of Princess Diana.
Jason Dawson, who is working on the new Children's Cancer Centre, described the retrieval as "really quite moving" and "connecting with memories of things that have been planted by a generation gone by". The items found serve as a tangible link to the past, offering a glimpse into the hopes and inspirations of 1991.
Interestingly, Princess Diana was not the first royal to bury a time capsule. In 1872, Princess of Wales, Alexandra of Denmark, buried a time capsule, but it has never been found or unearthed.
In a similar tradition, King Charles III has put a personal letter in a time capsule, which will be buried in Ayrshire and opened in the year 2125. The intentions are to take "the hopes and inspirations of 1991" and reflect new beliefs for the future.
As the new time capsule is prepared to be buried under the finished cancer centre, it serves as a reminder of the enduring tradition of time capsules and their role in preserving historical moments for future generations.
