Continued Economic Sanctions Against Russia Are Necessary, Claims Saeima Speaker
In a recent meeting, Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers) and US Congressman Andrew Harris discussed a range of pressing issues, with a particular focus on the security of Ukraine and Europe.
The need for high-tech solutions, such as drone production, was stressed during the discussion. Mierina highlighted the importance of further improving military capabilities to ensure the safety and stability of the region.
The continuation of sanctions against Russia was another topic of discussion. Mierina described Russia's objectives as aiming to subjugate Ukraine and divide its allies. She emphasized the importance of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine for transatlantic security in the long term.
Economic cooperation between the two countries, specifically in the defense sectors, was also discussed during the meeting. Mierina thanked the US Congress for its strong support for the Baltic security initiative and stressed the need for US investment in Latvia. She noted that Latvia, as a country that protects the external border of the EU and NATO, requires such investment to maintain its defensive capabilities.
The Saeima Presidium members emphasized the importance of European allies playing a more significant role in security matters. Close cooperation between all partners and like-minded people is essential to achieve peace, according to the Latvian lawmakers.
Mierina also expressed gratitude for the United States' crucial role in the security of Ukraine and Europe. She noted that the US plays a deterrent role for Russia, and its presence is crucial for maintaining peace.
The meeting was attended by other Saeima Presidium members, including Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica (New Unity), Antonina Nenaseva (Progressives), Edvards Smiltens (United List), and Janis Grasbergs (National Alliance).
In conclusion, the meeting between Mierina and Harris served as a platform to discuss the current security situation in Ukraine and Europe, the importance of economic cooperation in the defense sector, and the need for high-tech solutions. The Latvian lawmakers believe that continued US support is crucial for the security of Ukraine and Europe as a whole.
