Convict Accused and Convicted for Slaying Correctional Officer Who Revealed Affair with Female Staff Member
In the small town of Skelmersdale, Lancashire, the murder trial of former prison officer Lenny Scott has come to a close. Scott, a father of three and a man of utmost integrity, was gunned down in February 2024, leaving his family and community in shock.
The murder was a revenge killing, stemming from an affair between Scott and a female prison guard, which Elias Morgan, a former inmate from Liverpool, had attempted to conceal. Morgan initially tried to bribe Scott not to report the affair and later began threatening him when he refused.
Paul, Lenny's father, expressed the real-life danger the threats brought to him and his family. Lenny's parents, Neil and Paula, spoke ahead of the verdict, expressing their grief and frustration.
The murder trial began on June 24, 2024. CCTV footage captured the moment Scott was gunned down, with Morgan on bail for having a phone in his cell at the time. A recording of a 101 call made by Scott revealed he was scared for the safety of his family after the threats.
Scott found a phone in Morgan's cell that revealed details of the relationship. The suspect in Lenny's murder fled the scene on a bike, possibly an e-bike or scrambler bike. Morgan handed himself in at a police station two weeks after the shooting.
Detective Chief Inspector Lee Wilson from Lancashire Police expressed shock at the cold and calculating manner in which Lenny was murdered. Wilson led the investigation, but the search results do not specify the name of the person who arrested the murderer before he turned himself in.
Anthony Cleary, a friend of Morgan's, was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter in the same case. Lenny Scott's black clothes and an orange high-vis jacket were described after the shooting.
As the verdict was delivered, the community mourned the loss of a man who dedicated his life to keeping them safe. Elias Morgan, the murderer, is due to be sentenced on Tuesday. Paul, Lenny's father, believed Lenny felt he was making a difference as a prison officer.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who work in law enforcement, and the importance of justice being served. Our thoughts remain with Lenny's family and friends during this difficult time.
